The promenade stretches eight miles along the coast, from Hengistbury Head in the east to Sandbanks in the west. Although it can get too crowded for cycling during the day in high season, at other times it provides a perfect cycling route that overlooks the sea. Why not go for an evening ride to one end or the other?
There are also excellent cycling routes to Christchurch, just a few miles east of Bournemouth town centre. Besides stopping for a walk around the lovely Priory gardens, you could carry on down to the coast at Mudeford.
Cycling from Bournemouth
While there are plenty of options in Bournemouth itself, most cyclists will want to take the opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside of Dorset and Hampshire. For example, a short ferry ride from Sandbanks to Studland will open up the Isle of Purbeck, with places like Swanage and Corfe Castle to explore.
To the north-east, beyond Christchurch, you can find lovely scenery around Sopley and Burton, or you can take your bike on the train into the heart of the New Forest. If you’re into mountain biking, on the other hand, the best place to head for is Moors Valley Country Park, to the north. There are a number of woodland trails here around the stunning countryside.
