Our Sustainability Crew

Members of the team from each department in the hotel make up our CREW. They meet regularly to talk about Environmental Initiatives, Community & Charity Projects and Employee Welfare. We are so proud of the active role they take in everything we do.

From volunteering for the local homeless charity, Health Bus, to taking the time to understand mental health in our workplace, they work tirelessly to ensure that this is a wonderful place to visit and work.

They are at the forefront of our work to reduce our impact on the environment and help the rest of the team to reduce our food waste, curb our energy usage and ensure that we are recycling as much as possible. They also help to make sure our team are feeling healthy, happy and supported every day.

Energy Saving

We work hard to ensure that we improve our practices all the time. This includes looking for ways to minimise our energy usage. Additional training has been put in place to ensure that these changes are understood and supported by everyone in the building. Efforts include:

  • New end of night procedures to ensure nothing is using energy unnecessarily overnight.
  • Measuring and monitoring our energy usage each hour to ensure that we are consistently reducing our need for electricity and gas.
  • Measuring our Carbon Footprint annually and creating a roadmap for a greener future.
  • Looking carefully at our suppliers to ensure we are choosing them responsibly and that they are focusing on their environmental impact in turn.
  • Aiming to remove single serve items as much as possible to avoid creating additional waste.
  • Helping guests to understand their impact during their stay.

Reducing Food Waste

We are working hard to reduce the amount of food that is wasted each day. We can serve an average of 7,500 covers each month. That can mean a lot of food wasted including during preparation, over-production and uneaten food left on plates.

In the UK, 9.5 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, of which 67% could have been eaten.

Our team are working hard to ensure our menus are created to minimise food waste at each stage. Can we use over-produced food for another dish? Can we reduce portions and offer extra if people request it? Can we also encourage guests not to take too much from a buffet, but come back if they want more?

All of these things can help to reduce the amount of food going in the bin – an issue which adds to food poverty in the UK.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

As a family business, our aim is to create a community within the hotel that reflects the community outside the hotel. This includes our guests, our suppliers and our team.

We have an incredible host of accessible facilities making us one of the most accessible hotels in the whole of the UK. We also work with a large number of organisations in the local area to offer work experience, placements and employment opportunities to the disabled community. We are proud to say we are a Disability Confident Leader. This means we also help and advise other businesses to become more accessible.

For many years we have been involved as a partner with Bourne Free, our local pride organisation. Not only are we their main hotel partner, but we also host ‘Gay, Grey and Still Fabulous’ each year. This annual event is aimed at LGBT+ over 50’s and gives them a safe space to come together and celebrate pride.
