There’s a particular kind of seaside break that doesn’t get talked about enough. Not the one with a packed itinerary and an early start. The one where you wake up to sea views, take your time over breakfast, and let the day unfold at whatever pace feels right. Where the beach is something to walk along rather than stake out, and where a good dinner and a glass of something local is the main event of the evening.
That’s the Bournemouth that Marsham Court Hotel was made for. On the East Cliff, with the town centre and beach both two minutes’ walk away, it’s been welcoming guests who know what they like for over 35 years — and it shows.
A base that sets the tone
Where you stay shapes the feel of the whole break. A characterful, well-run hotel quietly resets the mood from the moment you check in.

Marsham Court is on Bournemouth’s East Cliff, with the town centre and beach both two minutes’ walk away. Many of the bedrooms and balconies look out across Bournemouth Bay, with views stretching from Hengistbury Head to Old Harry Rocks. There are 95 individually furnished en-suite rooms, free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and a workspace and laptop safe in every room (useful if you’re tagging on a day or two of working remotely).
The hotel has been family-owned and operated for over 35 years, with the kind of long-tenured team you only get at independent places. It’s a 4-star hotel that knows what it is, rather than chasing trends.
Slow mornings, and a beach you can enjoy properly
Most of what makes a really good break feel different happens in the morning. A breakfast you’re not rushing through. A coffee on the balcony with the bay in front of you. A walk before the rest of the town has fully woken up.
Bournemouth is at its best early in the day. The promenade is quiet, and the beach feels almost private if you head out before nine. Walk west towards Bournemouth Pier or east towards Boscombe and the pace stays peaceful for a good couple of hours. Marsham Court’s sun terrace and garden are also a lovely spot to sit out with a coffee and watch the day come together.
A pool, a garden, and somewhere to actually sit
There’s a particular pleasure in not feeling pressured to do anything. Marsham Court’s south-facing outdoor pool is heated from May to September, with cold-water swimming available from October to March if you’re that way inclined. Around it, the garden and sun terrace are ideal for the sort of afternoon where you finish a book, fall asleep, and feel entirely justified in doing so.
The hotel’s aromatherapy massage offering, provided by our external partner Amethyst Touch, is also worth knowing about. A massage in the middle of a break is the kind of thing you usually mean to book and then don’t, so make a point of it.
Eating well, on your own time
Good food matters on a proper break. The Plantation Restaurant is the hotel’s main dining space, with menus prepared by the kitchen team using local Dorset suppliers wherever possible, and a willingness to flex around dietary requirements (just ask). The Retreat Bar and Eatery is the more relaxed option — ideal for a casual lunch, an early dinner before heading out, or a late drink looking over the bay.

Beyond the hotel, Bournemouth and the surrounding coast have a strong independent food scene, from clifftop cafes to neighbourhood restaurants in Westbourne. The reception team is happy to point you towards somewhere that suits the mood.
Days out with room to breathe
The best breaks have shape but not a tight schedule. Bournemouth makes that easy.
The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum sits on the cliff a few minutes from the hotel, with its Victorian collection and excellent sea views. The Lower Gardens run through the heart of the town and are a lovely walk in either direction. For a longer day, the Jurassic Coast is on the doorstep: Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are easy by car, and Brownsea Island is reachable by ferry from Poole. The New Forest is only a short drive in the other direction. Pick one a day, leave time to stop for lunch somewhere, and come back to the hotel without feeling like you’ve been on a route march.
A hotel that’s set up for everyone
Marsham Court works beautifully for couples, for friends booking a sea-view weekend together, and for milestone occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, and the kind of break that marks a moment worth celebrating properly.
If you’re bringing the dog, there are a number of dog-friendly bedrooms and two self-catering apartments, with a doggy menu in the Retreat Bar and Eatery. And as one of the most accessible hotels in the UK, with features including a Changing Places facility, a Sensory Room, and five fully accessible bedrooms with ceiling hoists, profiling beds and wet rooms, the hotel is set up to make every guest feel genuinely looked after.
