5 most important things to consider when planning a wedding

Hi everyone,

Together with our Wedding Coordinator, Kat, we decided to start a Wedding Series on our blog to help the future brides and grooms in planning their special day. The blog posts will provide you with helpful tips and tricks on how to organise an unforgettable wedding. However, should you decide to have your wedding at Marsham Court Hotel, don’t forget that Kat will help you with all the worries and stress! We specialise both in intimate, as well as, big ceremonies and can cater for any needs.

Now, to start, here are 5 most important things to consider when planning a wedding:

1. Consider each other’s ideas

A lot of people have the saying “my day, my way” ringing through their head at the beginning. However, even though you may have the perfect image of what your wedding will look and be like, your partner might have some fantastic ideas up their sleeve, that you haven’t even considered. This day is about the both of you and for both of you. Sit down one evening with a couple of glasses of wine and discuss wedding plans in more details.

2. Set a budget

A key to successful wedding planning? Always set a budget. Trends change every year and something new pops up every minute. Setting aside appropriate amounts of money will help you track the expenses and focus on priorities. Some things may also cost more or less than you assumed at the beginning. Finally, always remember that there are things you can do yourself, if you need to save some cash… from table decorations to getting a polaroid camera for artist photos, you can get really creative when planning a wedding!

3. You can’t please everyone

One thing I (Kat) always tell my couples here is: “You cannot please everyone”. At the end of the day, this is your big day so the focus should be on you. The most common brought up point is special diets. Nowadays, venues are usually really good with special diets so you don’t need to worry about catering your menu to suit all the vegetarian, vegan or gluten free guests. Firstly, choose the menu that you and your partner like the most. Afterwards, discuss with the venue the special diet guests you have. They will most definitely will cater for them.

4. Communication is key

Make sure that you keep in contact with all your suppliers. Each one of them will have different meeting and payment times or timescales. My top tip for couples is to have what I call a “wedding bible”. This is just a notebook with everyone’s contact details in and key dates to remember not to miss anything. The wedding bible will help you throughout the whole planning process. Many couples come to a meeting with me with lots of pieces of paper that isn’t organised which makes them a little bit stressed out. If it is all in one place, that keeps me and also you calm.

5. Have fun!

I know there is a lot to consider when planning a wedding but do not get stressed out. This is supposed to be one of the best days of a person’s life, so you need to sit back and enjoy the ride. Wedding planning is also a great way to come together with friends and family to discuss ideas. Have fun decorating table centre pieces with friends, get everyone involved and make a few days out of it!

We hope that you found the above tips useful. From now on, Kat will appear on our blog regularly to share lots of helpful content with you.

Until next time,

Why gift vouchers are a good present idea?

Hi everyone,

have you ever had a problem with finding the perfect present? Well, gift cards or vouchers are the perfect for everyone. Almost all of us have received or given one in their life. The popularity of this option is growing every year.

Even though we sometimes find the perfect present for our friend or family member (or we think we do), the receiver can be disappointed. We all know it, it’s the thought that counts… but what’s the point of spending your money on something that is unwanted or useless? With a voucher you get some sort of guarantee – a person that is special to you will be able to have an amazing experience or buy something that is special to them.

In addition to that, you will also save the numerous hours you have to spend to find the perfect presents. When the event is approaching soon and you don’t have much time left, the situation can become even more stressful.

Gift cards don’t need to be impersonal. If you know that the receiver needs a holiday, get them a voucher for a hotel break. If they are looking to purchase a pair of earrings they always wanted, get them a gift card to that jewellery store. There are no limitations and it’s always better to give someone a gift card rather than just cash.

You can now purchase a range of gift vouchers on our website!
Treat someone special to one of our delicious afternoon tea’s or a monetary voucher for a short break. Find out more here.

How is Mother’s Day celebrated around the world?

Hi everyone,

Even though Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the country, the ultimate goal remains the same – to make our Moms happy and thank them for all they do every single day. So how are other countries celebrating it? Are their celebrations similar to the ones in the UK? Let’s take a look at a few places.

United States

Nowadays, US Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It’s not much different from our UK holiday – most families spend time together and kids give their moms flowers, cards and presents.

The tradition of American’s Mother’s Day started after the Civil War to reunite families divided during the war. In 1868, when “Mother’s Friendship Day” committee was created, Ann Jarvis and later her daughter Anna Jarvis tried to expand the day into something that is celebrated every year. Finally, on May 8th 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution that designated a particular day during a year to Mother’s Day celebrations.

Mother’s Day in this country also takes place on the second Sunday in May. Japanese mothers are gifted beautiful carnations which represent their strength.

This beautiful tradition was born in 1913 and was celebrated ever since (excluding the Second World War).

In the country of Matterhorn, Mother’s day (Muttertag) is on the second Sunday in May and it’s a celebration of love and gratitude.

The tradition started in 1917, during the First World War, and made Switzerland one of the first European countries to introduce Mother’s day. Quickly after that Germany and Austria followed.

Contrary to the previous locations, Ethiopian’s Mother’s Day is a three-day festival called Antrosht at the end of Fall. What are the celebrations? This time is reserved for dancing, singing and an unbelievable feast with a traditional hash meal.

All family members are obliged to bring an ingredient to not only celebrate their mothers but also the end of the rainy season.

While different versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, the traditions change depending on the country and its culture. Happy Mother’s Day!

Hello everyone,

This month we fully refurbished our Terrace Ballroom and the feedback we received has been incredible. As the last of the New Year revellers departed, the builders arrived to transform the Ballroom and Lulworth Suite. Ever mindful of the history of the hotel, the areas were updated with a fresh, new and elegant look whilst retaining the traditional charm in keeping with the style of the rest of the hotel. We hope you like it!

At night, the venue transforms to what you need: a vibrant colour coordinated space for weddings, private functions, conferences and events.

Why is team building beneficial?

Hi everyone,

Team building activities are well known however not a lot of people are aware of how beneficial they actually are. Did you know that they can drastically improve your team’s performance and boost their morale? Nowadays employers are a fan of trust-building exercises or day/weekend trips away.

Here’s a list of the top five reasons why team building is beneficial:

1. It improves communication

There’s no surprise that people work better when they communicate well. Getting to know each other can increase productivity in the office and make people work more efficiently.

2. It sparks creativity

Team building can contribute to creative workplace ideas. When people are comfortable with each other they tend to use their imagination more. They are also less worried to speak their mind.

3. It makes everyone work towards the same goal

Every company has a goal and vision which is often not understood by their employees. Thanks to team bonding it’s easy to “get everyone on the same page”, as well as, learn how to be more productive and work towards a common goal.

4. It boosts team performance

Teamwork is especially important for smaller groups. Thanks to team building activities employees know and understand each other better which supports their overall improvement. Interestingly, better teamwork equals enhanced team performance.

5. It improves employees’ morale

Making an effort to understand employees’ needs and improve their working environment increases their motivation and morale. This helps everyone to work more efficiently together by providing the highest level of service.

As you can see, team building has plenty of benefits for you and your employees. Use this information to your advantage and help your team to work better together! More on this coming soon from the Marsham Court Hotel.

Networking club for start-ups partners with Bournemouth Chamber

The south coast’s only networking club for new businesses is partnering with the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce (BCTC) to take on the ‘challenging’ times ahead. The BCTC will become official sponsor of New2Business Networking at the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth, from its next meeting on January 23, 2019.

The Marsham Court founded New2Business in January 2015 to provide support for new business owners and trainees of larger businesses. In the past four years the free to attend, bi-monthly meetings have hosted around 300, new start-ups.

Jane Swift, Business Development Director at the hotel in Russell-Cotes Road, said: “We are thrilled to gain the support and expertise of the BCTC, particularly as we all proceed towards the uncertainties surrounding Brexit.” She continued: “During the last four years, New2Business has welcomed hundreds of new companies which have reached a certain level but need further help to grow.

“We enable people to share their experiences, ask questions and ask for advice. Starting a new business is a big step and connecting with other businesses is key – but it can also be daunting. Our members tell us they appreciate the informality of our meetings and the opportunity to share the wisdom of speakers who have already achieved success with their businesses. Working with the BCTC and its diverse membership will only enrich what we offer.”

Richard Milton, Executive Director of the BCTC and MD of Marketing company e-nexus Ltd, agreed: “This partnership is a perfect fit for both New2Business and the Chamber. “I myself have attended New2Business as a business owner for over 18 months and have been immensely impressed by everything about it, from its informal atmosphere to its level of attendance and the way it supports its members. The BCTC was born over a hundred years ago, but has the same very relevant aim – to support the local business community by providing networking opportunities, the very latest business information, training and development.”

He continued: “The south coast continues to witness encouraging business growth and as Brexit and its implications for business unfold, there will be an even greater need than ever for the BCTC and New2Business. I am excited about the months ahead.”

New2Business Networking meetings are free to attend and feature a speaker, followed by an informal networking session. To sign up to attend the next meeting on January 23, please do so at:
