5 reasons to have an intimate wedding

Today, we are going to talk about small and intimate weddings. We definitely noticed that there is a huge trend when it comes to this type of ceremonies. Kat, our Wedding Coordinator, came up with 5 reasons to have an intimate wedding:

1. Budget Friendly

The first reason is pretty straightforward. Having a very large guest list requires a very large budget. Reducing the list to close family and friends will definitely save you a lot of money, that you can spend on your Honeymoon.

2. Bespoke offer

As it is a smaller wedding you will most likely be able to tailor packages to suit what you want for your wedding. The changes will also easier to implement.

3. Focuses on what matters most

With a smaller number of guests present during your wedding day you can spend more time with your loved ones, as well as, your partner. There is only a limited amount of time and ideally you should spend some time with everyone. By having too many guests couples often don’t get to sit down and take in the whole day.

4. Less stress

Probably one of the most important reasons as to why you should bet on an intimate wedding. Less people, less stress! There is no need to be calling 100 people to ask if they are still coming or making long lists of special diets and buying too many thank you gifts… You can relax knowing that everything is in hand.

5. Makes the day more personal

Making DIY decorations will definitely be easier.  There is also less tables and chairs to worry about. That way you can spend a bit more time on favours, as you don’t need to buy them for the masses of people with a big wedding. Little touches will make your wedding more memorable than a big lavish ceremony where people may not get to see everything.

How to organise Hen or Stag Do

Today, let’s talk about a organising Hen and Stag Dos. As we all know, for most it’s an inseparable part of wedding preparations. Nevertheless, sometimes the preparations can be stressful and add to an already tense atmosphere. Kat, our Wedding Coordinator, have put together a few tips to make it easier:

Make sure to plan well in advance

If you invited a fair few people or perhaps thinking about going abroad everyone’s diaries can get booked up quite quickly. Planning in advance will increase your chances to have all people in attendance.

Ask about budgets

Some of your guests may be able to afford what you had in mind. You should all discuss and agree on a mutual budget and stick to it. You definitely don’t want people to not be able to attend due to financial restrains.

You can organise an event before the Do

Not everyone will know each other, so it may be nice to go out for a casual drink or have a gathering prior. This is also a nice way to discuss plans for the actual hen/stag do as everyone is gathered in one place.

Think about the bride/groom

Consider what they may have mentioned before, their personality and preferences. Not everyone would like to go to Vegas as much as perhaps you would. Remember to be considerate when choosing what to do.

Outfits

To make the party even more interesting, you may wish to have matching outfits. Always choose ones that can be easily put together. There is nothing worse than buying a whole new wardrobe for one event.

Have fun but not too much fun!

Enjoy your time with friends/family, but just remember that rules & laws do apply. It is never a good idea to get a little bit too drunk and end up down at the local police station!

Why Winter Weddings are Wonderful

Today, let’s talk about a Winter Weddings. As we all know, most weddings take place in the summer time. Nevertheless, choosing a different time of year can make your special day even more magical. Here is what Kat, our Wedding Coordinator, has to say about this topic:

Winter Weddings are absolutely some of my favourites. It’s that time of year when everyone feels very festive and jolly. In addition, all the Christmas lights are up making everything even more cosy. We live in England where the weather is sometimes unpredictable any time of the year. Having a Winter Wedding may mean that you will be able to have some unique photos in the snow so definitely prepare for some cold shots outside!

Having a winter wedding is a nice idea because you can get into the Christmassy vibes by changing certain options of any of our wedding package. Why not swap a Pimm’s reception to a nice glass of mulled wine? Or instead of tea/coffee to finish the wedding breakfast, why not have hot chocolate with cream and chocolate shavings? The options are limitless.

You can also do a lot with theming. We have had a December wedding where the couple’s favours were little gingerbread men, their seating plan was hung on a Christmas Tree and they used tinsel & baubles around their reception room! Once again there are no rules here but we will help you make your wedding day the most special.

Lighthouse Poole’s Centre for the Arts, 17 January 2020

Sandi Toksvig is touring her new, one-woman comedy show.  Sandi realises some people harbour an ambition to be a National Treasure but following a misunderstanding with a friend has decided instead to become a National Trevor – half misprint, half Danish comedian, novelist, actor and broadcaster.

Expect tall stories, fascinatingly funny facts, really silly jokes, a quick fire Q&A and a quiz. Don’t expect tap-dancing, leotards or a forward roll. Read more about the event here.

Circus of Horrors 2020

Light Up Poole

Light Up Poole, the annual festival of digital light art, is set to return in February with three nights of extraordinary light spectacles and community events that will transform the town after dark.

Bournemouth Christmas Tree Wonderland 2019

Are you looking for a mystical, magical and memorable experience? This year Bournemouth has prepared a spectacular Christmas tree trail, enchanting illuminations and more!

This year the Christmas Tree Wonderland will begin on 15th November 2019 and end on 2nd January 2020. Why is it worth to visit Bournemouth during this time? The 60 ft centre piece walk-through animated Tree with regular sound & light shows will be situated in the middle of the Lower Gardens. Additionally, the tree trail will feature over 100 trees and replicas of trees from six cities around the world.

What’s new this year?
Some of the new attractions include: Crimson Vodafone Gigafast Tree of Light, Polar Walk, Golden Reindeer, Teddy Bears Picnic and Shimmering Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf. Here’s a link to the official Christmas Tree Wonderland Trail.

If Christmas Trees are not your thing, there is tons of other attractions waiting for you in Bournemouth. Visit the outdoor ice rink and skate under the stars! The Alpine Market and Alpine Lodge Bar will also be open if you prefer something more relaxing. Moreover, Santa’s Magical Grotto will provide an incredible experience for the little ones.

Follow the trail and continue the adventure through Lansdowne, the Traingle, Horseshoe Common and the Coastal Villages. Other parts of Bournemouth will also have their own themes and festivities!

How to choose a wedding décor/theme?

Today, let’s talk about a wedding décor/theme. Here are some tips from Kat, our Wedding Coordinator, on how to the best option for your Wedding Day:

  1. Consider your venue and their décor

You might be having your wedding in a beautiful barn with plenty of fields surrounding it. This is a great venue to go very rustic as it naturally complements it. If you were getting married somewhere where all the walls are yellow, you may want to stay away from conflicting colours. I would always consider the venue décor when planning… you don’t want anything clashing!

  1. Have a clear theme

It is not great to mix a lot of different ideas together. Once you have a clear idea for your décor, you can start a Pinterest page for inspiration. The best theme I have seen at the hotel is an amazing Willy Wonka themed wedding. The groom dressed up as Wonka, their centre pieces were buckets of chocolate and sweets and they even had a Wonka Gate for an entrance into the ceremony!

  1. Choose a theme that means something to you

There are some lovely wedding ideas around that suit what the couple is all about… for example “travelling” couples will often send out their invites as passports, label their tables with places that they have visited around the world and use a globe as their “guest book” where guests write their best wishes on. I think choosing a theme that means something to you is a great idea!

4. Choose a theme that means something to you

Make sure that you have a clear idea of how much you want to put towards the décor for the wedding. Flowers can be extremely expensive so I would suggest shopping around or haggling quotes! Some couples can forget about their budgets and end up paying far too much.

  1. Don’t go too over/under board

I know this is extremely hard to asses. I would suggest speaking to the Wedding Coordinator at your venue to see what other people have done in the past and ask to see some photos. This will also give you an indication of what is required to make the room look fantastic. Wedding décor companies often offer site visits, so they can understand the venue and share their vision with you.

 

Choosing your wedding theme does not need to be hard if you really think about what you want. Consider your venue and budget but, most importantly, choose something that has a meaning to both of you.

How to choose your wedding entertainment?

Hi everyone,

Let’s talk about wedding entertainment. Choosing the one you would like to have on your big day can be hard. You want to make sure that all your guests are entertained throughout the day.

Kat, Our Wedding Coordinator, have put together a list of some great options that we have seen at the Marsham Court Hotel:

  • Magician– always a great idea to have one during a drinks’ reception or in-between the wedding breakfast and evening reception. The guests are always stunned at the mind blowing and unbelievable tricks.
  • Caricature Artist– this is also a nice favour idea! Instead of having little sweets out on the table, guests can have a drawing of themselves done by a caricature artist to take away and keep. They can remember your wedding day forever now.
  • Children’s entertainer– this is a perfect idea if you have quite a few children attending. This will help them to stay happy and busy throughout the day to let the parents have some fun.
  • Barn Dance Band– if you want everyone out on the dance floor, I’d recommend getting a barn dance band. This is so much fun to watch and participate in, as they have a person calling out all the dance moves you should be doing. It’s a bit of fun and provides plenty of laugh.
  • Sweet Cart – this is both for children and the adults. I have seen a few sweet carts at weddings, but I do like it the most when they have a colour theme and all sweets are the same colour.
  • Sparklers– this is a great way to end a magical day! Here, at Marsham Court Hotel, you can use the terrace for sparklers in the evening. Your photographer may get some great photos too.

  • Photo booth– this is definitely everyone’s favourite attraction and it always gets guests out of their seats. It’s also a lot of fun watching people get dressed up in funny props. Afterwards, most photo booth companies give a book with all the pictures to the happy couple so it’s a nice thing to keep.
  • Fireworks– even though you aren’t allowed fireworks at the hotel, we have had many clever couples who had their Wedding on a Friday in August and that is when the Bournemouth fireworks are on down by the pier. We are in a perfect location to be able to view them from the terrace.
  • Butterfly/dove release– this is a lovely idea and it is also great for some intimate photos.
  • Garden games– they keep both the children and adults entertained. A giant Jenga always gets the wedding guests excited.
  • Table trivia– to keep guests entertained throughout the meal, it is nice for them all to bond over a game of trivia to break the ice, especially if they don’t know each other that well.
  • Casino– most casino companies make personalised wedding money which is a nice touch as no one actually loses any money. This form of entertainment is especially popular later on in the evening.

The best wedding advice from our Wedding Coordinator

Hi! My name is Kat Tegg and I am the Assistant Events Manager who manages all weddings at the Marsham Court Hotel. Here is some wedding advice for the newly engaged couples:

  1. Take your time

If you are newly engaged and thinking about setting a date for the wedding, I would suggest setting a date around 1 year or 18 months from the engagement to be safe. This gives you plenty of time to organise the venue & suppliers, and you won’t be rushing at the end of it. Suppliers often get booked up quite quickly so if you book them more in advance, you have bigger chances that they will be available. Remember to set reminders and make as many lists as needed to keep you on track with planning for your wedding.

  1. Realise that not everything has to be perfect

A lot of couples get caught up with Pinterest and their wedding boards. Even though it is an amazing platform to look for wedding inspiration, people often try a couple of DIY decorations and it does not turn out to be like the photo on Pinterest! By all means, have a go and create some wonderful decorations as this definitely saves a lot of money, however, don’t get upset if it just isn’t the same as on the picture.

In addition, gathering from my years of experience as the wedding coordinator, please know that weddings do not run on time. This is a fact. Don’t be dishearten if a couple of things over run. This is still going to be a fabulous day on time or not.

  1. Don’t stress

This is supposed to be the best day of your life. I know that kind of sounds stressful but remember to sit back and take baby steps when planning. Don’t pile too much on yourself all at one time. Get friends and family involved with plans, you’re not alone. This can turn into a fun time for all who are involved and takes a bit of work off of your shoulders!

  1. Remind yourself of what is important

In the end, the only thing that matters is the two of you. On the Wedding day you both celebrate your love and happiness. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to show that. So, I say kick your shoes off and have a great time.

  1. Eat & drink

I can’t count the amount of times we have had to make a separate plate of canapés for the happy couple because they were too busy with photos. I think many people forget to eat and drink as they are too busy chatting and having a great time, which is amazing, but we don’t want anyone to pass out. In addition, you have spent the money on all the drinks and food, so you better try it out!

Planning a Christmas Party…

Christmas seems to be far away but it is never too early to start planning the Christmas Party. A lot of companies book their venues months in advance so if you don’t want to be left out then you have to start thinking about it now. We hope that the list below will help you to get organised and ready for the Festive Season:

First step, date, time and venue

When it comes to planning any party, the three things mentioned above are probably the most significant to establish first. Make sure you find the right venue within your budget (consider what type of party you want to organise, car park availability and other important features). Choose a date that is close to the 25th of December but doesn’t interfere with your employees individual Christmas plans.

Second step, Guest list

Create a guest list to know exactly how many people you are expecting to come and for how many you have to cater for. This will also help you in creating all the invitations later on.

Third Step, Choose a theme

Winter Wonderland, Caribbean or Vintage party? Maybe you prefer something more traditional? Choosing the right theme can be a bit of a challenge but it can really add something special to the celebration. If you are unsure about what to do, it may be a good idea to get the employees opinion and ask them to fill out a survey to include them in the planning process.

Fourth Step, Plan your menu

Another thing that needs to fit within your budget is the menu. Do you prefer a buffet style dinner or a sit down three-course meal with full silver service? What about drinks? Make sure to ask the employees about any special dietary needs prior to the event and that the venue is able to cater for them.

Final step, Send out the invitations

After all the planning it is time to send out the invitations! They will help you to establish how many people are actually going to come and if they have any special needs. Try to send out the invitations as soon as you can to finalize the planning process.

 

Now that everything is planned and the guests are invited… all you have to do is wait for the party and hope it is going to be a success. Good luck!

Wedding on a budget

As we all know, weddings can get very expensive. There are a lot of things to consider and remember about but there certainly are ways on reducing the overall cost. Kat, our Wedding Coordinator, is an expert at organising weddings for all budgets so she would like to give the happy couple some advice on how to save:

1. Wedding and Bridesmaid Dresses
In case you didn’t know, there are some stores that re-sell pre-loved dresses at a reduced cost (have a look here or here). There are also some dress stores that sell both wedding/bridesmaid dresses for under £600! Finally, take a peek at the popular online stores… you can find amazing dresses at affordable prices in ASOS or Missguided.

2. Grooms/Groomsmen Suits
Instead of buying the suits out right, remember that you can hire the them for a day and save on the costs! Not sure where to look? Moss Bros are very popular for hiring suits!

3. Wedding Cake
There must be an amazing aunty or cousin who is a fabulous baker in the family! Additionally, homemade wedding cakes are becoming more common. Now it’s the time for a top tip from me: “Not everyone eats the wedding cake!” Don’t focus on having the biggest 5-tier cake if there are only 50 guests coming. Some cake stores can make a polystyrene bases to save a bit of money too.

4. Sweet favours
What is the best time to buy any sweets or chocolate favours for the big day? After Christmas sales! Once we had a Charlie & Chocolate Factory themed wedding at the Marsham Court Hotel and they hit the supermarkets after Christmas to get all the selection box chocolates in the sales, which saved them a lot of money.

5. Flowers
If you aren’t fussed by flowers, I think the best thing you can do is to purchase some fake flowers. Some of them look just as good as the real thing. As flowers are extremely pricey for weddings, we include a few arrangements in our wedding packages which you can read about here.

6. Low Season/ Late availability weddings
If you are on a budget, sometimes the best time to save money is to look at low seasons for weddings (October- March – excluding December). Some venues offer late availability dates at a reduced cost or they add in something for free such as canapes during a drinks’ reception. Getting married between Sunday-Tursday will also be cheaper.

7. Find a venue that has everything
Here, at the Marsham Court Hotel, we supply the ceremony, wedding breakfast & evening reception venue, as well as drinks, food & accommodation. Hiring all suppliers externally can add up! We have many packages to suit the requirements of every couple. The smallest wedding we organised had only 12 guests and our biggest one had 200 guests. So, whatever it is you are looking for we can definitely cater for it!
