5 Free things to do in Dorset

By

Hi everyone,

Dorset is full of unbelievable places to visit and many things to do all year round. We have put together a short list of top 5 free things to do in this beautiful county.

Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove

One of Dorset’s most iconic places. The Durdle Door arch is situated at the top of a high cliff. Additionally, you can also visit the Lulworth Cove which was formed by the combined forces of the sea and a river swollen by melting ice at the end of the last Ice Age. Not only the views are incredible but there are also two beaches to choose from to spend a relaxing day with your family.

Old Harry Rocks

This UNESCO World Heritage Site managed by the National Trust is another popular destination among tourist and local residents. The unique rock formation provides breathtaking views of the Jurassic coast.

Moors Valley

Moors Valley is a fabulous country park. The Go Ape high ropes course (both for kids and adults), the Play Trail, miniature steam railway or cycling are only a few things you can do during your visit. The Park gets busy in the summer time but you can visit it all year round.

The beach

Dorset enjoys nearly 100 miles of coastline! The Jurassic Coast’s sandy beaches are one of the most stunning ones. As such, it comes as no surprise that Bournemouth beach was voted #1 in the UK, 5th in Europe and 14th in the world.

Dorset is full of surprises all year round. When will you visit us next time?

Stunning day for Mr & Mrs Graca!

By

Congratulations to Fred & Marj who got married with us on Friday 10th May 2019. The couple got very lucky with the weather for their wedding. Both Marj & Kat, the wedding coordinator, were keeping an eye on the weather forecast in the days upcoming to the wedding, and it was not looking that great. However, in the day it was stunning! Very warm and bright just for their big day. Thankfully they were able to get married outside in the Wedding Pagoda.

As it was such a beautiful day the happy couple went down to the beach for some photos whilst their guests enjoyed a bucks fizz reception with canapes on the terrace outside. Marj & Fred booked their wedding before the refurbishment of the Terrace Ballroom and they were thrilled with the finished look. Guests also thought the Terrace Ballroom looked great all dressed up for the wedding breakfast. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the menu chosen by the couple including a wonderful Lamb Shank cooked to perfection by the chef.

Later on in the evening, guests enjoyed dancing the night away and taking funny photos with some props. Such a great day for a lovely couple! Congratulations once again, we hope to see you both soon again!

See what the Bride and Groom had to say about their special day:

We had our wedding in May. Marsham Court Hotel staff were all lovely and very accommodating with our needs. We booked our wedding over a year ago and Kat who was our coordinator has helped us sort everything out from the registrations in the beginning up until the day of the wedding. She has been very responsive with our emails and this has helped us a lot to sort out every inch of details we needed to make our wedding a perfect one. Kat made sure all the things we need for the wedding are sorted and she has been very helpful especially with the small but important details that I don’t even think of. The food they have served were really delicious! All our guests have loved it and they accommodated all the special dietary needs of our guests even during the wedding. All the staff were lovely. Andy – the duty manager was fantastic and has made sure that we were taken care of during our wedding day. Graeme also has been very helpful making sure we have everything we need. The hotel was in front of the beach and it was our dream to have a beach/outdoor wedding and it was fulfilled! Can’t thank the staff enough! It was the perfect wedding!!

Magical day for Mr & Mrs Hacker!

By

Congratulations to Anne & Stephen on their wedding here on Saturday 6th April 2019!

The happy couple got married in the Bay Suite with close friends and family. The function room was nicely decorated and had lovely views of the beach. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception afterwards, and joined the couple down by the Wedding Pagoda for some group photos.

A bit later on in the day, guests enjoyed a fabulous 3 course wedding breakfast served in the Dorset Suite. The room looked stunning with help from ST-Events. They used the twinkle back drop, chair covers with silver sashes, and beautiful candelabras as centre pieces. After the wedding breakfast, some speeches were said with everyone in fits of laughter and some with happy tears!

In the evening, everyone could kick their shoes off and dance the night away whilst munching on the finger buffet provided.

We are so pleased for Anne & Stephen and we wish the nothing but happiness in their new married lives together!

We had our Wedding Ceremony and Reception at Marsham Court Hotel, on 6th April 2019, and the sun was shining! From the first meeting with Kat Tegg, Event Organiser, we were filled with confidence that all that was promised would be fulfilled. Nothing was too much trouble, everything we requested was catered for. Our Wedding guests have all said ‘Best Wedding Ever’. The food was excellent, faultless in quality and service, special diets all catered for without question. All the staff were polite and helpful (everyone remarked on that quality). On the day the organisation between Kat, Graham and Lawrence was second to none, making sure everyone and everything was in the right place at the right time. If you want a well organised, hassle free, first class, wedding and reception in a lovely setting then look no further than Marsham Court Hotel. Excellent value for money and superb quality, which no other venue could ever hope to match. Thank you so much for making our wishes come true.

Why gift vouchers are a good present idea?

By

Hi everyone,

have you ever had a problem with finding the perfect present? Well, gift cards or vouchers are the perfect for everyone. Almost all of us have received or given one in their life. The popularity of this option is growing every year.

Even though we sometimes find the perfect present for our friend or family member (or we think we do), the receiver can be disappointed. We all know it, it’s the thought that counts… but what’s the point of spending your money on something that is unwanted or useless? With a voucher you get some sort of guarantee – a person that is special to you will be able to have an amazing experience or buy something that is special to them.

In addition to that, you will also save the numerous hours you have to spend to find the perfect presents. When the event is approaching soon and you don’t have much time left, the situation can become even more stressful.

Gift cards don’t need to be impersonal. If you know that the receiver needs a holiday, get them a voucher for a hotel break. If they are looking to purchase a pair of earrings they always wanted, get them a gift card to that jewellery store. There are no limitations and it’s always better to give someone a gift card rather than just cash.

You can now purchase a range of gift vouchers on our website!
Treat someone special to one of our delicious afternoon tea’s or a monetary voucher for a short break. Find out more here.

Until next time,

Sunny day for the new Mr & Mrs Butler!

By

Congratulations to Shane & Katie on their marriage with us on Thursday 28th March 2019! The lovely couple booked their wedding a while back and was unsure on what the weather would be like in March 2019. Luckily, we had sunny views all day and the couple were able to get married outside in our Wedding Pagoda. The parachute gliders were also out on that day, so during the ceremony guests were waving to them as they passed.

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a Bucks Fizz reception in our newly refurbished Lulworth Suite whilst relaxing in the sun on the terrace. The wedding breakfast was served in our brand new Terrace Ballroom. We were so happy that the couple liked the room as they had not seen it since the refurbishment. Katie, the bride, is Disney mad, so she daintily decorated the room with Disney character tables, and also had a superb wedding cake to suit the theme. Shane also did have his favourite things on the back of the cake.

In the evening, guests enjoyed dancing the night away and tucking into the finger buffet. We are so pleased everyone had a wonderful time, and we wish Mr & Mrs Butler all the very best!

Congratulations to MCH’s Managing Director!

By

Many congratulations to Rosie & Rob on their marriage! Everyone at the hotel was thrilled to hear that the two love birds were engaged. Rosie & Rob flew to Jamaica with Rob’s son George where they tied the knot. The photos looked amazing and they both had a wonderful time. Once they were back they hosted a wedding evening reception here at the hotel.

The Solent Suite was nicely dressed up with beach themed decorations, including centre pieces and their backdrop to the photo booth. Their cake was the main talking point of the night. Rosie’s favourite animal is a giraffe, so as the toppers for the cake they had ‘Rosie the giraffe’ and ‘Rob the hippo’! Chef out did himself with the sweet treat requests. Have a look at all those tuxedo strawberries!

Congratulations once again to you both, and we wish you many more years of love and happiness!

How is Mother’s Day celebrated around the world?

By

Hi everyone,

Even though Mother’s Day falls on different days depending on the country, the ultimate goal remains the same – to make our Moms happy and thank them for all they do every single day. So how are other countries celebrating it? Are their celebrations similar to the ones in the UK? Let’s take a look at a few places.

United States

Nowadays, US Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It’s not much different from our UK holiday – most families spend time together and kids give their moms flowers, cards and presents.

The tradition of American’s Mother’s Day started after the Civil War to reunite families divided during the war. In 1868, when “Mother’s Friendship Day” committee was created, Ann Jarvis and later her daughter Anna Jarvis tried to expand the day into something that is celebrated every year. Finally, on May 8th 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution that designated a particular day during a year to Mother’s Day celebrations.

Japan

Mother’s Day in this country also takes place on the second Sunday in May. Japanese mothers are gifted beautiful carnations which represent their strength.

This beautiful tradition was born in 1913 and was celebrated ever since (excluding the Second World War).

Switzerland

In the country of Matterhorn, Mother’s day (Muttertag) is on the second Sunday in May and it’s a celebration of love and gratitude.

The tradition started in 1917, during the First World War, and made Switzerland one of the first European countries to introduce Mother’s day. Quickly after that Germany and Austria followed.

Ethiopia

Contrary to the previous locations, Ethiopian’s Mother’s Day is a three-day festival called Antrosht at the end of Fall. What are the celebrations? This time is reserved for dancing, singing and an unbelievable feast with a traditional hash meal.

All family members are obliged to bring an ingredient to not only celebrate their mothers but also the end of the rainy season.

While different versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, the traditions change depending on the country and its culture. Happy Mother’s Day!
